Miniyothabo was born in Nkayi, Bulawayo, Matebeleland North, Zimbabwe on July 2, 1977. She was raised in Filabusi, Matabeleland South, where she attended elementary and high school. Baloyi became interested in languages and cultures at an early age and chose to become a language translator. In 2005, she enrolled in the PLA University of Foreign Languages in China to study Chinese Mandarin. In 2009, she earned a first-class Bachelor of Arts degree in Chinese. Baloyi continued her education at the University of Zimbabwe, where she earned a Master of Arts in International Relations and International/Global Studies in 2012. She subsequently enrolled at Midlands State University, where she earned a Ph.D. in Business Leadership, Business Administration, and Management in 2019.

Career

Baloyi joined the Zimbabwe National Army while she was in her twenties and progressed through the ranks to the rank of Colonel. She is one of the army’s few female officers, and her professionalism and determination have been lauded. Baloyi met Constantino Chiwenga, Zimbabwe’s former army general and current vice president, through her military career. Chiwenga is largely recognized as the architect of the 2017 coup that deposed long-serving President Robert Mugabe and installed Emmerson Mnangagwa as his successor.

Baloyi and Chiwenga reportedly began dating in 2018, following Chiwenga’s divorce from his second wife, Marry Mubaiwa, on charges of attempted murder, fraud, and money laundering. Baloyi was one of the few persons allowed to see Chiwenga during his extended medical treatment in China in 2019. He was diagnosed with idiopathic oesophageal stricture, a disorder that causes esophageal constriction. Baloyi’s work as a language translator made her a valuable asset to Chiwenga and the Zimbabwean government, particularly in negotiations with China, Zimbabwe’s principal economic and political supporter. Baloyi speaks English, Chinese Mandarin, French, Zulu, Shona, and Ndebele, among others.
