She became the second female player, after Polgár to achieve the 2600 Elo rating level in October 2007, with a rating of 2606.
In 1997 (under-10 girls’ division), 1998 (under-12 girls’ division), and 2000, Koneru won three gold medals at the World Youth Chess Championships (under-14 girls). She won the under-12 segment of the Asian Youth Chess Championship in Ahmedabad in 1999, fighting against males. Koneru was the World Junior Girls Champion in 2001. She tied for first place with Zhao Xue in the following year’s tournament but finished second on tiebreak.
