Zijie Yan Early Life, Age

Zijie Yan was born in 1983 in China. At the time of his death, he was 40 years old. He was raised in Jingmen, a city in Hubei’s central region.

Zijie Yan Education, Biography

According to the source, Yan was gifted; he was exceptionally brilliant and wished to make as many contributions to science as possible. His intellect was obvious even as a toddler. He did well in all areas of school, but he excelled in science and mathematics. Yan graduated from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2005 with a double bachelor’s degree in materials science and engineering and computer science, and a master’s degree in physical electronics two years later, according to records.

Career

He traveled to the United States in 2007 to pursue a doctorate in materials science and engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York. He worked there under the guidance of Professor Douglas B. Chrisey, a well-known expert in laser material processing. Yan’s research centered on the fabrication and characterization of nanomaterials in liquid using pulsed laser ablation. Several works on the production and behavior of hollow nanoparticles, nanorods, nanospheres, and nanocomposites were published by him. He also invented a new method for producing anatase TiO2 single crystals with exposed 001 and 110 facets, which demonstrated increased photocatalytic activity.

Yan joined the University of Chicago as a postdoctoral scholar in the laboratory of Professor Norbert F. Scherer, a leader in the field of optical matter, after finishing his Ph.D. in 2012. Optical matter is a novel substance composed of nanoparticles held together by light-induced forces.  Yan made significant contributions to this emerging field by demonstrating optical trapping and manipulation of single silver nanowires, optical binding interactions in shaped light fields for guiding and spatial arrangement of silver nanoparticles, material assemblies of silver nanoparticles using phase gradients of optical tweezers, and optical vortex induced rotation of silver nanowires.

He also used theoretical and computational approaches to investigate the possible energy surfaces and reaction routes for light-mediated self-organization of metal nanoparticle clusters. Yan was hired as an associate professor of applied physical sciences at UNC from 2019 to 2022. He formed his research team and continued to study cutting-edge areas such as optical matter, nanophotonics, and nanomaterials.  Yan obtained research funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Energy (DOE).

Zijie Yan Wife And Kids

Zijie Yan was a married guy with two children. His wife’s name and other facts, however, are not publicly known. He kept his private life quiet and concentrated on his work life as a scientist and professor.
