Yahya Bello is a Nigerian politician and businessman. Since 2016, he has been the Governor of Kogi. Bello, a member of the All Progressive Congress, is Nigeria’s youngest governor. He competed for president in the party’s 2023 primaries but was defeated by political veteran Bola Ahmed Tinubu.  Bello was appointed by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, where he served in 2002. Yahaya Bello was born on June 18, 1975, in Okene, Kogi state. His parents’ names are Alhaji Bello Ipemida Ochi and Hajiya Hawa Bello Oziohu. He was the youngest of six kids. In 1984, he enrolled in the Local Government Education Authority Primary School in Agasa in the Okene Local Government Area. Bello was named class two prefect and then became the school’s head boy in sixth grade. He attended high school at Agasa Community Secondary School in Anyawa, Agasa-Okenne, and graduated from Government Secondary School in Suleja, Niger State, with the Junior Secondary School Certificate Examination and Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination Certificates in 1994. Bello attended Kaduna State Polytechnic Zaria in 1995 and earned an accounting degree from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria in 1999. He earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the university in 2002.

Career

After completing his NYSC year, he was appointed to the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, where he served until 2002. He began as a revenue officer but was quickly promoted to accountant. Then, before leaving the Commission, he was appointed Assistant Chief Accountant. Before the stock market crisis, Alhaji Yahaya Bello gained financial success by mastering stock trading tactics. His stock portfolio consists of transportation, finance, oil and gas, and agricultural industries. Then he increased his real estate holdings, spreading them throughout numerous states in the union. He is the Managing Director of FairPlus International Limited and Chairman of the Kogi Youth Arise Forum.

He formed the Kogi Youth Arise Group with other politically smart young people to launch his political career. The group backed Buhari and Osinbajo’s presidential campaigns in the previous election. The group also rallied youngsters in 239 wards across the state in support of President Buhari. He announced his desire to run for governor in the 2015 election on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform, garnering tremendous support from youngsters across the state eager to lead Kogi to a brighter future. On December 6, 2015, Yahaya Bello succeeded the late former APC candidate, Abubakar Audu, whose death on November 22 rendered the Kogi State governorship campaign inconclusive. He was sworn in as Governor of Kogi State on January 27, 2016.

Controversy

Yahaya Bello has been implicated in an ongoing corruption investigation. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has accused him of participating in a scheme to plunder more than N80 billion from the state.

The main defendants in the case are Mr Bello’s nephew, Ali Bello, and his accomplice, Dauda Suleiman, who are accused of converting funds for personal benefit. The EFCC also named an alleged co-conspirator, Abdulsalami Hood, who is now “at large”.

Yahaya Bello was also charged by the US Department of State with subverting democracy and instigating violence during his state’s 2019 gubernatorial election, which resulted in a visa suspension.
