Vijayakanth is an Indian politician who was once a Tamil actor, producer, and director. He is the founder, president, and general secretary of the political party Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK). He was the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 until 2016. Vijayakanth passed away on December 28, 2023, following an illness. He was 71 years old at the time. His wife Premlata, who currently leads the party, survives him.

Vijayakanth was born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India on August 25, 1952. Vijayraj Alagaraswami was his full name. His father was K.N. Alagaraswamy, and his mother was Andal Alagaraswamy. M.C. Vijayakanth was named “Puraichi Kalingar” in the film business. In his films, he was also recognized for playing patriots, local sympathizers, and dual characters. Many people refused to play with them, and no famous filmmakers came to create films with them. He played a police officer in almost 20 films. He was notorious for making low-budget films with gravity-defying stunts in which he single-handedly knocked out his opponents.

The majority of his films dealt with corruption, honesty, and maintaining commitments. He worked three shifts a day because he was so dedicated to his craft. To help struggling producers, Vijayakanth collected compensation late or not at all. More significantly, he did not attempt to promote these and let the rest of the world see and be inspired by them. He changed his name from “Raj” to “Vijayakanth” when he entered the film business to pursue an acting career and made his debut in the film M.A. “Throat” was added to Kaza’s Inikkum Ilamai. He then obtained S. A. Sattham Oru Iruttarai, directed by Chandrasekhar, which gave him his first taste of success. He was an action icon with sustained box-office success in the 1980s and 1990s. He got the moniker “Captain” after his 100th film, Captain Prabhakaran (1991).

The media widely publicized the ongoing dispute between Vijayakanth and comedian Vadivelu, who was Vijayakanth’s co-star in several notable films. On 21 September 2008, a gang pelted stones at Vadivelu’s residence in Saligramam, Chennai, damaging several windows and furniture. Vadivelu said that he suspected that it was Vijayakanth’s men, as he had filed a court case against Vijayakanth for assault, the final court hearing of which was to be held the next day. Filing another case of attempt to murder against Vijayakanth, Vadivelu mentioned his interest in competing against him in the next assembly elections and “teaching him a lesson”.

In a news conference, Vijayakanth said that Vadivelu’s charges were based on rumors. During the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly elections in 2011, Vadivelu campaigned hard for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and its allies. During his public statements, he mostly chastised Vijayakanth, whose Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam has allied with the opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. Vadivelu was chastised for being prejudiced, for backing the DMK-led triumph only for personal benefit, and never once opposing the AIADMK or its leader J. Jayalalitha. The AIADMK coalition was eventually successful in the election, with Vijayakanth winning by a wide majority in his constituency.
