Teena Marie Brockert was born in Santa Monica, California on March 5, 1956, the daughter of construction worker Thomas Leslie Brockert and house renovator Mary Anne. Her early years were spent in Mission Hills, California. She claimed to be of Belgian, Portuguese, Italian, Irish, and Native American ancestry. She found her paternal grandparents formerly resided in New Orleans when visiting Louisiana in 2005. By the age of two, she had mastered the “Banana Boat Song” by Harry Belafonte. Brockert participated in the Summer Dance performance and was the female lead in the school’s performance of The Music Man while attending Venice High School. She also headed a local Venice rock band called “Truvair” in 1974-1975, with members of the band being her high school friends.

Brockert juggled auditions for numerous record labels with studies in English literature at Santa Monica College after graduation.
