He was named offensive coordinator at NC State in 2013, reporting to head coach Dave Doeren. Canada had previously worked under Doeren in 2011 at Northern Illinois. Canada committed to a new three-year deal with NC State shortly after interviewing for the offensive coordinator position at Tennessee. Following the 2015 season, he was let go by NC State.

Canada was appointed as Pitt’s offensive coordinator in 2016. He was selected as one of five nominees for the Broyles Award, which is presented annually to the finest assistant coach in college football, for his performance during the 2016 season. Canada was appointed as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at LSU on December 14, 2016. He maintained those responsibilities for the 2017 season before LSU and Canada mutually agreed to part ways on January 5, 2018. Canada agreed to become the offensive coordinator at the University of Maryland on January 22, 2018. Canada was named interim head coach of the Maryland Terrapins on August 11, 2018, when D.J. Durkin was placed on administrative leave following the death of Jordan McNair, a Maryland offensive lineman.

Maryland came within a hair’s breadth of defeating third-ranked Ohio State on November 17, 2018, falling 52-51 in overtime. Maryland concluded the season 5-7, missing out on a bowl game. Canada was relieved of day-to-day head coaching duties at Maryland after Mike Locksley was named as the permanent head coach.
