Mary Kay Holthus was born on August 20, 1961, in Endicott, New York, to an American family of Polish origin. Her maiden name was Mary Kay Sinicki. She has a sister, Laurie Sinicki. She attended Union Endicott High School and graduated in 1979. Mary subsequently continued her studies at the State University of New York at Binghamton, where she got a Bachelor of Science in Economics in 1983. She completed her studies at Villanova University School of Law, earning a Juris Doctorate in 1986.
