Career

Suarez was a key component of Inter Milan’s success under Helenio Herrera, and he was one of the team’s major creative powers owing to his ball skills, vision, and passing range. He joined Sampdoria in 1970 and remained there until 1973 when he retired from the sport.  On January 30, 1957, he made his debut as Spain beat the Netherlands 5-1. He also represented Spain in the FIFA World Cups in 1962 and 1966. After retirement, he went into coaching football. He won the U-21 European Championship with Spain in 1986 while coaching Internationale Milano for three seasons.

Suarez managed his previous club Inter Milan three times: as head coach during the 1974-75 season, and then as a caretaker coach during the 1991-92 and 1995-96 seasons. He led Spain’s under-21 national team to the European Under-21 Championship championship in 1986; in 1990, he was the manager of the Spanish senior national team at the World Cup, when they were ousted in the round of 16.
