Birnbach was born to a Jewish family on New York’s Upper East Side, the daughter of Naomi and Maks Birnbach. Before World War II, her father went from Germany to Mandatory Palestine, where he was a member of the Irgun, and later to the United States, where he worked as a diamond importer; her mother worked for the Jewish Museum. Norman Salit, her maternal grandfather, was a rabbi and president of the Synagogue Council of America. From 1962 to 1971, she attended the Birch Wathen Lenox School and the Riverdale Country School.
She continued her education at Barnard College for one year before moving to Brown University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours in Semiotics in 1978.
