Birnbach was born to a Jewish family on New York’s Upper East Side, the daughter of Naomi and Maks Birnbach. Before World War II, her father went from Germany to Mandatory Palestine, where he was a member of the Irgun, and later to the United States, where he worked as a diamond importer; her mother worked for the Jewish Museum. Norman Salit, her maternal grandfather, was a rabbi and president of the Synagogue Council of America. From 1962 to 1971, she attended the Birch Wathen Lenox School and the Riverdale Country School.

She continued her education at Barnard College for one year before moving to Brown University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours in Semiotics in 1978.

Birnbach traveled to Europe and worked for an advertising agency after graduating. Birnbach began her career as a staff writer at The Village Voice in April 1979, where she co-wrote the Scenes section. Lisa has written 15 books since The Official Preppy Handbook, for publications such as the New York Times and magazines such as Glamour, Parade, Rolling Stone, and TV Guide. She was Spy magazine’s deputy editor. Birnbach served as a technical advisor on the film Dead Poets Society. She co-presented Good Night America and was a correspondent on The Early Show, where she hosted the “Yikes!” segment. “I’m an Adult!” She is the co-creator and co-host of ABC’s Zero Hour, the co-writer of the off-Broadway revue Loose Lips, and the host of the comedic radio show The Lisa Birnbach Show until 2007.

She co-wrote True Prep: It’s a Whole New Old World with Chip Kidd in 2010. On September 13, 2010, she appeared on The Colbert Report.
