In 1995, Konda Surekha was elected to the Mandal Parishad. She was designated a PCC member in 1996 and M.L.A. from Shayampet in 1999. She was elected Treasurer of the Congress Legislature Party in 1999, and she also served on the Women and Child Welfare Committee, as well as the Health and Primary Education Standing Committee. In the year 2000, she was elected as an AICC member. She was elected as MLA -Shayampet in 2004 and served as an official spokesman for the Congress party in 2004. In 2005, she was appointed as an Ex Officio Member of the Municipal Corporation. She was elected Parkal MLA in 2009 and sworn in as Minister for Women Development and Child Welfare, Disabled and Juvenile Welfare.

Under Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, she held the positions of Minister for Women’s Development and Child Welfare and Minister for Juvenile Welfare. However, she resigned following YSR’s passing because his son, Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy, was not appointed Chief Minister despite the backing of the majority of MLAs. On July 4, 2011, she resigned from her MLA position, first for the Jagan cause and then after YSR’s name appeared in the FIR. She ran for the YSR Congress Party in the June 12, 2012, by-elections from the Parkal assembly constituency.

In July 2013, she resigned from the YSRC party, claiming mistreatment by Jagan Mohan Reddy Party members. Days before the 2014 Indian general elections, she joined the Telangana Rashtra Samithi party and ran for the Warangal-East Assembly constituency.
