Kalusha was named African Footballer of the Year by the magazine France Football in 1988, and he was nominated for the 1996 FIFA World Player of the Year, when he was chosen the 12th best player in the world, making him the first player to be nominated after playing the full year for a non-European team. The FIFA adjudicatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee found him guilty of violating FIFA Code of Ethics articles 16 and 20.
