Jim was born in Toledo, Ohio, to football coach Jack Harbaugh, and grew up in several locations as a result of his father’s coaching duties. He went to high school in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Palo Alto, California. After graduation in 1982, he went to Ann Arbor to attend the University of Michigan and play quarterback for the Wolverines. In 1986, he led Michigan to the Rose Bowl and was a Heisman Trophy contender.
Harbaugh was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the first round of the 1987 NFL Draft and went on to play quarterback for the Bears (1987-1993), Indianapolis Colts (1994-1997), Baltimore Ravens (1998), and San Diego Chargers (1999-2000). He rose to prominence in 1995, when he led the Colts to the AFC Championship Game and was named Pro Bowl and NFL Comeback Player of the Year.
