Ike Ekweremadu was born in 1962 at Amachara Mpu in Enugu State’s Aninri Local Government Area and is of Igbo descent. He graduated from the University of Nigeria with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Law and was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1987. In addition, he possesses a Doctor of Philosophy in Law from the University of Abuja in Nigeria.

After finishing primary school, Ekweremadu attended St. Dominic’s Secondary School in Ugiri, Imo State, before transferring to Boys Secondary School in Umueze Awkunanaw, where he earned a Grade 1 in his West African School Certificate. He was admitted to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) to study law and graduated in 1986. Ike subsequently went on to law school and was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1987. He later earned his MMasterin Law from the same university in 1999, and in 2014, he completed his Doctorate study at the University of Abuja.

Ike Ekweremadu’s political career began in Enugu State when he was elected Chairman of the Mpu Town Union. He was then elected Chairman of the Aninri Local Government Council. Ekweremadu was appointed Chief of Staff at the Enugu State Government House and then Secretary to the Enugu State Government, positions he held till 2002. Ike Ekweremadu was elected to the Senate for the first time in 2003. On the Peoples Democratic Party platform, he was elected to the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to represent the Enugu West Senatorial District. In the ensuing senatorial elections in 2007, and 2011, he was re-elected. In 2007, he was appointed Deputy President of the Senate.

As deputy, he was tasked with allocating committee chairmanships to the southeast zone, making judgments that many senators disagreed with. Ike Ekweremadu was crucial in resolving the controversy surrounding Ojo Maduekwe’s dubious appointment to a cabinet position in July 2007. Ike Ekweremadu was appointed co-chairman of a commission to oversee the primary elections for the PDP candidate for governor of Anambra State in September 2009.  He was elected president of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in September 2009, and he sat on an ad hoc commission charged with restoring constitutional order in Niger Republic.

He was elected as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament in August 2011 and later became the regional parliament’s Speaker. In 2011. He ran for Senate again in the 2015 general election and was elected. As Senate Deputy President, he was re-elected. On February 23, 2019, Ekweremadu was re-elected as a senator for the fifth time in a row, but he lost his attempt to become the upper chamber’s deputy president to Ovie Omo-Agege.
