The British publication Financial Times (FT) stated in November 2023 that US officials had “thwarted” a conspiracy to assassinate Pannun in the US and that federal prosecutors had filed a secret indictment against a defendant in a New York district court.
The Financial Times also stated that the US had issued a diplomatic warning to India amid suspicions that the Indian government was complicit in the scheme. The revelation came two months after Canada accused Indian operatives of murdering Hardeep Singh Nijjar. A White House spokeswoman acknowledged that the event was reported to India sometime after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s June 2023 visit to the US. Arindam Bagchi, a spokeswoman for the Indian Foreign Ministry, claimed that the Indian authorities were reviewing the US inputs.
