Popovici participated in the 50-meter, 100-meter, and 200-meter freestyle individual events at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, which were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, after strong performances at the European Championships. Popovici won gold in the Men’s 200-metre freestyle event on November 6 with a timing of 1:42.12, beating his national record from the World Cup. He did not get to the finals of the Men’s 100m freestyle and Men’s 400m freestyle individual events.
