Chris was born on 7 February 1965 in Andrews, South Carolina, U.S. He is an American stand-up comedian, actor, and filmmaker. In the early 1990s, Rock came to popularity as a cast member of Saturday Night Live after working as a stand-up comedian and acting in minor parts in films.
He also appeared in a number of films, including Down to Earth (2001), Head of State (2003), The Longest Yard (2005), the Madagascar film series (2005–2012), Grown Ups (2010), Grown Ups 2 (2013), Top Five (2014), and a number of critically praised HBO stand-up specials. In 2020, he starred in the fourth season of the FX anthology series Fargo, a black comedy–crime drama. Chris wrote the sitcom Everybody Hates Chris (2005–2009), which was based on his life.
He has hosted Academy awards in 2005 and 2016 and also won four-time Emmy Awards and three-time Grammy Awards. In a survey sponsored by Comedy Central, he has rated the fifth-best stand-up comic. He was also voted the ninth-greatest stand-up comedy in the United Kingdom on Channel 4’s 100 Greatest Stand-Ups in 2007, and the eighth-greatest stand-up comic in the revised 2010 list.
