He was the Regional Chairman of the Ghana Contractors Association for the then-Upper Region and a significant player in the Northern Region’s NPP. Following his release, he became Chairman of Real Tamale United Football Club, where he collaborated with late Vice-President Alhaji Aliu Mahama. He was appointed national head of the National Contractors Association in the Northern, Upper East, and Upper West areas in 1987. He eventually entered mainstream politics and contested the Northern Region chair of the NPP with the late Alhaji Salifu C.O.P for two consecutive terms during the tenure of Prof. Adu Boahen and former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
In 2010, he was defeated in his quest for the NPP’s Northern Regional Chair position by Mr. Haruna Tia Sulemana, but he defeated him again in 2014. In the 2016 general election, he increased the party’s parliamentary seats from 10 to 13. He also strengthened support for the NPP’s then-presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo. In 2018, he was appointed to the NPP’s National Council after losing his re-election effort to Mr Mohammed Samba Baantima.
