Bobby Lee began working in the coffee shop, but when it closed in 1994, “I just went next door to get a job then”, Bobby remarked, referring to “The Comedy Store in San Diego” (also known as the La Jolla Comedy Store). After a few months of doing various tasks at the club, he decided to try his hand at stand-up comedy. He received opportunities to open for Pauly Shore and Carlos Mencia, as well as frequent employment at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles, which is owned by Pauly Shore’s mother Mitzi. Bobby Lee has stated in various interviews that his parents were opposed to him joining the comedy industry and thought he would continue the family company.

On February 1, 2011, Bobby Lee spoke on a podcast interview conducted by fellow actor and comedian Joe Rogan about how his parents barely spoke to him during the first few years he did stand-up, but when he appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, his father called him and apologized for not supporting his comedy career. Lee’s family may also be seen in some of his work, with his younger brother appearing in various non-speaking parts on Mad TV and his entire family appearing in a sketch. Bobby Lee also launched a Comedy Central comedy in 2007 about a Korean family that was going to establish their own family. Mad TV, Lee joined the cast in 2001.
