He was born on 14 November 1946 in Enkakkad Thrissur, Wadakanchery, Trichur, Kingdom of Cochin. He is an Indian filmmaker, artist, and art director and famous for forming a new school of Malayalam filmmaking. Bharathan started his career as an art director in the Malayalam film Gandharavakshetram (1972), produced by A. Vincent, after getting his diploma at the College of Fine Arts in Thrissur. His uncle, established director P. N. Menon, was an inspiration to him. He made his directorial debut in 1975 with Prayanam, based on Padmarajan’s storyline, after serving as an art director and assistant director in a few films. It also saw the rise of two early middle-stream Malayalam directors.
Bharathan has directed over 40 Malayalam and Tamil films. Bharathan started his professional in 1975 with Prayanam and rose to power with Thakara, a film about a dimwitted central character who falls in love with rustic beauty.
