Atanu received his BA from Vinayaka Mission University in Salem, Tamil Nadu. He was interested in archery and, at the age of 14, he enrolled in a Kolkata archery institute to perfect his talents.

Atanu began representing India at the international level in 2008, at the World Youth Championships, when she won her first medal, a bronze medal. He earned the gold medal at the 33rd Junior National Archery Championships in 2010. He took silver in the recurve junior men’s team at the World Youth Championships in 2011.
