His elder brother Vijay Govil married Tabassum, a former child actress who hosted the first Bollywood celebrity discussion program Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan on Doordarshan for 21 years. He completed his official education at Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, where he studied engineering science and performed in several plays. He spent his teenage years in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. His father wanted him to work for the government, but Arun wanted to do something that would leave an impression on people.
