Gobert made history by winning the season’s last stage at Phillip Island in 1994, making him the youngest World Superbike race winner at the age of 19. Yuichi Takeda broke the record in 1996. Beginning as a successful Motocross racer as a youth, he transitioned to road racing and won the Australian Domestic Superbike Championship. Gobert, an internationally recognized rider, drew notice as a wild card at the 1994 Superbike World Championship round at Phillip Island, when he took pole position and won. In 1995, while racing full-time for Muzzi Kawasaki, he became team captain and finished fourth overall, winning at Laguna Seca and Phillip Island.

In 1997, he competed in the 500cc World Championship with Lucky Strike Suzuki but was fired mid-season after failing a drug test. Moving up to the AMA Superbike Championship on a Vance & Hines Ducati in 1998 and 1999, Gobert was successful, earning a WSBK wildcard triumph at Laguna Seca. Gobert temporarily raced for Muse Webber in 1999 and took part in a one-off 500 cc race at Donington Park in 2000. In 2000, he returned to WSBK on a Bimota SB8R and won a wet race at Phillip Island. Despite the team’s financial woes, Bimota paid tribute to Gobert by calling the bike the SB8K. His adventure continued in 2001 when he raced in the AMA Championship for Yamaha for two years before briefly joining Ducati in 2003.
