Otti was born at Umuru, Umuehim village in Ehi Na Uguru Ancient Kingdom, Isiala Ngwa South LGA of Abia State to the late Pastor and Mrs. Lazarus Weze Otti. He attended Ngwa High School in Aba and Secondary Technical School in Okpuala Ngwa in Abia State, where he graduated as the best student in his class during the school certificate examinations. He then continued his education at the University of Port Harcourt, where he earned a First Class honors degree in economics in 1988.
Otti received his MBA from the University of Lagos in 1994. He has participated in several overseas courses, including the Executive Development Programmes at Columbia Business School, Stanford Business School, and Wharton Business School (University of Pennsylvania). In addition, he completed an executive program at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France. Babcock University bestowed an honorary doctorate on him in 2009, and the University of Port Harcourt bestowed an honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degree on him in 2012. In 2013, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Otti began his financial career in 1989 as an operations clerk at the Nigerian International Bank, a subsidiary of Citibank New York. Following that, he joined Nigerian Intercontinental Merchant Bank Ltd. He worked at Intercontinental Bank in both the treasury and financial services section and the corporate banking division. He joined Societe Bancaire Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of Banque SBA Paris, in 1992 and quickly advanced to the rank of senior manager. Otti then joined the United Bank for Africa (UBA) as the principal manager in charge of the bank’s corporate banking sector for the entire South Division, as well as the duty of increasing the bank’s oil and gas business.
He joined First Bank of Nigeria, PLC as assistant general manager in May 2001, with the sole duty of growing the bank’s Energy Sector. He was promoted to deputy general manager in April 2004, and a year later was named executive director, of commercial banking. This was followed by a promotion to executive director south directorate, where he was in charge of over 140 branches in the country’s South-South and South-East geopolitical zones. He went from First Bank Nigeria PLC to Diamond Bank as group managing director/CEO in March 2011 and has guided the bank through a substantial turnaround. After his initial term expired, Diamond Bank extended his contract for another three years in March 2014. Otti retired voluntarily on October 24, 2014, and Uzoma Dozie was appointed as the new GMD and Bank CEO.
