Abdulrasheed Bawa began his career with the EFCC in 2004 as an Assistant Detective Superintendent (ADS). He was chosen to lead the commission’s investigations into Diezani Alison-Madueke, a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, and her accomplices in October 2015. He has worked on cases including advance fee fraud, official corruption, bank fraud, money laundering, and other connected offenses. Bawa is the EFCC’s youngest chairman to date. He received training from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC).
During his tenure as the EFCC’s zonal head for Port Harcourt and Lagos, he successfully investigated and testified in the prosecution of several cases, leading to convictions and the recovery of plundered monies. From 2015 until 2019, he oversaw Mrs. Diezani Allison-investigations, Madueke’s which resulted in the recovery of millions of money and assets. His appointment as the Chairman of Nigeria’s EFCC catapulted him to national prominence in 2021, and he was named one of Nigeria’s Under 50 Leaders in Public Service in the same year, alongside other government appointees such as Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad of the Rural Electrification Agency, Hadiza Bala Usman of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Elijah Onyeagba, Nigeria’s ambassador to the Republic of Burundi, Aishah.
