Early Life: – In 1977, Adamu entered politics and was elected to the Constituent Assembly, which produced the constitution for Nigeria’s brief Second Republic. He was a founding member of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), the first Secretary-General of the NPN in Plateau State from December 1978, and the Plateau NPN chairman from 1982 to 1983, when military control was reinstated. General Sani Abacha’s regime appointed him to the National Constitutional Conference in 1994.
Professional Career: – Adamu welcomed Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom to Karu in December 2003, where she was entertained by cultural troupes. Adamu pledged to make Nasarawa famous for its strong mineral riches and tourism features such as the Farin Ruwa Waterfalls and the flowing Eggon Hills. He supported the Farin Ruwa Falls Hydro-Electric plant’s construction, visiting South Korea in 2004 and later awarded the engineering contract to the South Korean business Yooshing Engineering. In September 2005, he started the Nasarawa State School Feeding Programme, which seeks to offer a fortified nutritional supplement to elementary school pupils.
Following the conclusion of his two-term governorship, Adamu was appointed Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Board of Trustees (BOT) (PDP). In November 2009, a number of senior PDP members declared that they will back his candidacy for the Nasarawa West Senate district in the 2011 elections.
Adamu was detained in February 2010 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly stealing $100 million in government funds intended for public projects.
